In 2005 Neopets added a Secret Petpet Laboratory. Access to the petpet lab is only available if you first have access to the Secret Laboratory (the one for pets) and collect all nine pieces of the Petpet Lab Map.

Pieces of the petpet map can be found in random events and in user shops. The prices have dropped since they were first introduced and can now be purchased on average for 2500 NP each.

The Petpet lab can be reached by going to the games/puzzles page and choosing Treasure Maps. After you have access to the main secret lab, and collected all nine pieces of the petpet map, you will be able to visit the lab once a day.
Proceed to the lab
Once you are inside the Petpet lab, you can choose just one petpet to zap each day. How the zap affects your petpet is always a surprise, but it will be one of these things:
  • A change of color
  • A change of species
  • Gain a level
  • Lose a level
  • Turn your petpet to a pile of soot
  • Change their name
  • Make it disappear
  • Absolutely NOTHING
There are other things you need to know about the Petpet Lab
  • Zapped petpets return to their original state when you unattach them.
  • Turmaculus enjoys zapped petpets.
  • Zapped petpets are not eligible for the PPL award.
  • Petpets that have turned to piles of soot can still be zapped.
When a petpet has been zapped to a pile of soot you will receive the Petpet Lab avatar!

All the secrets of the Petpet Lab have not yet been discovered, but there are a few you may not know about. Only the Petpet Lab can turn a petpet into certain colors such as Gold, Strawberry, Chocolate and Jelly. There are even some species that are only available through the lab. The Chiruck and Skaffle are two of them. But remember, once you unattach your petpet, it will revert to it's original form. Once a petpet has been zapped by the lab your pet's user look up will have an annotation under the petpet.
