Interacting with your Neopets

To have a happy and healthy Neopet you must:
  • Feed it
  • Keep it healthy
  • Play with it
  • Take it on trips
  • Give it lots of attention
If you don't take good care of your pets, they will become unhappy and may become sick.

Feeding your Pet

Your pets get hungry and need to be fed every day. Be careful of what you feed your pets. Certain pets have unusual food requirements while others will eat anything when they are hungry, even non-foods from Your Items, without asking first. Certain items, such as poisonous foods may make your pet sick.

Once per day you can get free food from these locations:
  1. If you have less than 3,000 neopoints, a warm bowl of soup.

  2. Lots of eggy varieties.

  3. Located in the non-existant Jelly World.

  4. Free food for fast fingers.
Sponsor Stands: Once a day your pets may also visit these locations for free food and drinks.
  1. Ice cold colas and more.

  2. A tasty variety of Rice Balls.

  3. Every pet loves NeoPet cereal.

  4. A selection of drinks.
You can also buy food from:
  1. Other players’ shops found throughout Neopia
  2. Main Neopian shops found on all the worlds and Neopia Central
To feed your pets, go to Your Items and click on the food you want to feed your pet.  A window will pop up with a drop down menu where you select the pet you want to feed. Once your pet is bloated, it cannot eat anymore. Note: A starving or sick pet may not be pretty, but it will not die. Keep in mind if your pets are hungry, they cannot fight in the Battledome.

Another option to feed your pets is to go to the Neolodge where you pay a fee to let your pet stay at the hotel of your choice for however long you decide they should stay. During their stay they are fed and looked after.

Entertaining / Grooming your Pet

What keeps your pet at its happiest is playing with it and grooming it. The highest level of happiness for a pet is delighted! Items that raise your pet’s happiness level can be purchased from Neopian shops, other player’s shops, won while playing Games or Quests, and through Random Events.

To play with one of your pets, you need to have a toy or other item in Your Items. A toy comes also with the newbie pack you received when you created your very first pet. Once you have purchased a toy, go to Your Items and click on the toy. A window will pop up with a drop down menu where you select Play with ‘Pet’s Name’. Once you click submitYou are the best owner ever! or All my friends will be jealous.

Other items not considered toys but keep your pets happy when they play with them can be purchased in other player’s shops and various Neopian shops:
your pet will look happy and say a message such as, If you play with them on a regular basis, it is more likely your pets level of happiness will stay high.
  1. Musical instruments

  2. Books, which also increase your pet’s intelligence when you read the books to them.

  3. Items to groom your pet and make them look pretty.

You can also take your pets on trips to various tourist attractions:
  1. The Mystery Island Tiki Tours is a good place to go. Cost of tour: 50 Neopoints

  2. The Roo Island Merry-Go-Round is also a good place to take your pet. Cost of tour; 50 Neopoints

  3. The Kiko Lake Glass Bottom Boat Tours

  4. The Maraqua Kelp Restaurant is another place, but it is extremely expensive.
Note: Your pet cannot play, wear or otherwise do anything with items of clothing that may be purchased throughout Neopia. The only exception to this is if the item is considered battle gear used in the Battledome. Items of clothing can only be put in a Gallery, given to friends, donated, stored in your SDB or resold in your shop, auction or trade.

Your Pet’s Health

Your pet's happiness level will drop if they stay sick for a long time. Diseases can be caught from certain events such as: wheels, Random Events and certain foods for certain species. If your Neopet is sick, they will look sad and beaten on your user lookup and on their pet lookup. You will not be able to battle in the Battledome. To cure them, you have to go to the Neopian Hospital

to see what kind of disease your pet has.

Once you know what disease your pet has you can find the medicine needed to cure your pet at the Pharmacy

or in other player’s shops. Once you have purchased the cure, go to Your Items; click the item and select Cure “pet name”, and your pet will be cured.

You can also cure your pet by taking them to the Healing Springs.

Note: Your pet will not die from any of the diseases he can catch in Neopia.
Be sure to read our guide on pet Illnesses and Cures.

Bad Random Events

Three random events may occur if you don’t take care of your pets properly, although they are rare.

Red random event: Your pet’s color changes to red. This happens when your pet is not happy, instead (s)he is angry. It can be bad if your pet is a rare color like royal.

Blue random event: Your pet’s color changes to blue. This is just like the red event except for the fact that the color is different, and it happens when your pet is sad. NOTE: Your pet doesn’t turn gray.

Invisible random event: Your pet’s color changes to invisible. While this may be cool for some people, for others it is not. This happens if your pet feels ignored, unwanted and unnoticed.

All in all, if you take care of your pets by keeping them healthy, happy, and fed, you should have a nice life in Neopia where your pets are the color you want them to be.
